This movie was made in a good year. No, I’m not admitting it is the same vintage as I am! Honest! Moving on. Quickly.

We watched the Mystery Science Theatre 3000 cover of this science fiction movie. You can find the full version of this legitimately on YouTube at the moment.

It starts well enough: a space shuttle in orbit, and an accidental exposure to some kind of radiation. We’ve all been there right, Quatermass? Right, Fantastic Four? Unfortunately this is less the super power kind of irradiation and more the, uh, melting kind.

So our main character observes the sun through the rings of Saturn (I think?!) and falls unconscious. When he wakes again, the process of melting has begun. He takes this badly, to be honest, and begins a murderous spree after escaping from what seemed to be a hospital, while chasing his first victim, what seems to be a nurse. Although at second glance, I’m not sure either were what they seemed too be.

This ‘nurse’, having run away very slowly for a long time through what looked like a large warehouse, didn’t bother to stop for the outer door. I mean, wow.

So of course, the military general does the only thing that can be done, with an irradiated mutating astronaut on a brutal rampage. He tells the doctor who reports it that it must be top secret, and the doctor himself must track down the missing man before it’s too late.

So after recruiting a single, specific, non-qualified person to seek and find the missing person, the general does nothing more for a long period of time. Meanwhile, the astronaut carries on running away, casually killing several passersby, and the doctor does the only thing that he feels he can. He goes home for dinner. And a lot later on, heads out to have a bit of a look around.

“No, I’m a doctor. That’s right. A doctor. No, I don’t want to go out and look for your… oh, what now? Sheesh.”

There is at some point now an interlude where someone’s elderly parents are going to dinner, and haven’t thought to bring a gift like a bottle of wine, so they stop at a lemon orchard to scrump some as a gift, and only just escape from the incredible melting man.

I am not going to spoiler the end. Mostly because after a certain point everything just blurs into one, long endless chase across random landscape. I have little idea how the locations join up. Just watch it and enjoy it for the incredible melting mess that it becomes.
