I can’t help but find this utterly surreal movie very, very satisfying. I’m not saying it’s any good! But it has the same kind of hallmarks that instalment 1 of the Monkey King had.
It goes on for ages, the story has a number of layers not all of which are strictly necessary, there’s a rags to riches story, there’s an overcoming the monster story, there’s a love story and then right when you think you know what’s going on and how it’s going to end, there’s a magic sword and a giant fat bird. AND more.
I’m not even kidding about the giant fat bird.
