This movie has a seed of greatness buried in it. I mean, a bit further down than you’d hope it would be buried. But I think it’s there, none the less. What makes me think that? I can’t quite put my finger on it.
Something about the set up. Innocent man set up by his criminal big brother, brother defends his big brother and still loves his mum, even though she’s sad he’s in prison and apparently turned out the ‘bad egg’ of the siblings.
Something about the settings. Prison. A run down pub.
Something about the characters. The panoply of hard bitten, hard biting gang members. The stolid, unwavering nature of the big brother. The worn out woman behind the bar, going nowhere but relentlessly devoted none the less.
Where did it lack? The plot was simple, so simple it didn’t need all the details they kept shovelling in. It could have been simpler. Only the two brothers really stood out. There could have been better development of some of the others. A female lead, or even a female gang member, would not have gone amiss.
Seed of greatness.
